George Farragut was a US Navy officer who served during the American Civil War. He was born on December 7, 1807, in Spain and was the father of Admiral David G. Farragut, one of the most renowned naval commanders in American history.

George Farragut joined the US Navy as a midshipman in 1825 and spent most of his career serving in various roles on several ships. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1838 and served in the Mexican-American War.

During the Civil War, George Farragut was initially assigned to take command of the Union gunboat USS Colorado but was subsequently ordered to serve as a captain of a fleet of gunboats that were tasked with capturing New Orleans. He played a key role in the Union's capture of the city in April 1862.

After the war, George Farragut was promoted to rear admiral in 1866 and served as the Commandant of the Norfolk Naval Yard until his retirement in December 1868. He died on August 2, 1870, in Portsmouth, Virginia.
